About my Eagle Project

Please check out the artwork on the libraries. Each one is uniquely painted and although they are all different, they do have a common theme of “Read to succeed.”

“Books are teachers. Books are friends to lonely kids. Books are dream makers. Books are vehicles that take you to far away places.  I want other kids to have the opportunity to have access to books anytime they want.”

Facts About Literacy in America
– 1 in 4 children in America grow up without learning how to read.
– Students who don’t read proficiently by the 3rd grade are 4 times likelier to drop out of school.
– Nearly 85% of the juveniles who face trial in the juvenile court system are functionally illiterate, proving that there is a close relationship between illiteracy and crime.
-More than 60% of all inmates are functionally illiterate.

While looking through the Little Free Library website, I saw that there were few in the Allen, Texas area.  I decided that the Little Free Libraries could make an impact in multiple ways.  They could help kids with literacy while at the same introduce them to an Eagle Project.  Each library would have placard stating it was an Eagle Project and each book would have a sticker with the same information.

I didn’t think just one or two would make much difference. I believed I needed  to place several. I didn’t think it would be hard to get locations for them.  Boy was I wrong!

While I eventually got approval to place them at Alton Boyd Elementary School, Lindsey Elementary School,  Woodstream cul du sac and Woodhaven cul du sac  of Villages at Maxwell Creek HOA, the Allen Police Department and St. Jude Catholic Church, there was a lot more push back than I expected.
